Tohaku Sumac Candles (Medium)

These candles are crafted using raw materials derived from haze (sumac) trees. The natural energy stored in these plants are utilized when these candles are burned, thus making them eco-friendly. When lit, these candles do not create soot but burns slowly creating a warm brighter flame. 

The wick of these candles are crafted from a combination of washi-paper, rush weed, and silk fiber crafted with a unique recipe dating back to the 16th century, when candles were the main source of night light. 

Sumac wax is sourced from Kyushu region and washi paper for the wick from Iwami (Shimane prefecture), assembled and crafted in Nanao (Ishikawa prefecture), where each candle is crafted by an artisan from creating the wick, melting the wax, moulding, and shaping all by hand.

Takazawa candle creates traditional Japanese candles called "WA-ROUSOKU", made from natural waxes since 1892 in Nanao (Ishikawa prefecture). In the early 16th century, the cultivation of haze (wax trees), a raw material used in wa-rousoku flourished in Kyushu and Shikoku bringing the resoures to Nanao, where a group of craftsmen started to create candles for their homes.

Wa-rousoku has two main characteriestics, their plant-based raw materials (haze trees, rice bran, washi paper) and their unique wick, which allows a brighter, powerful, longer flame. Takazawa candles had been creating these wa-rousoku for centuries protecting the tradition. 

Store candles away from direct sunlight and open flame. When lit, please do not leave it unattended and reach out of children or pets.

A white powder may appear on the surface of wa-rousoku. This is a trait unique to plant-based wax and occurs when the wax crystallizes. It is not a quality defect.
